The Gilles Lartigot Special
The Gilles Lartigot Special: recipe from my ebook Living Juices. Ginger contains gingerols and shogaols which inhibit COX-2 and 5-lipoxygenase, the two key enzymes of the inflammatory cascade.

It’s the shot I systematically take when I’m sick. It was Gilles Lartigot who introduced me to it in his books. On the first day, I almost spat it out because it was so strong. Today, it’s my reflex as soon as I feel the first symptoms: an immediate boost, without caffeine, without the crash at 11am. Ginger awakens circulation, turmeric extinguishes inflammation, lemon alkalinizes and black pepper multiplies curcumin bioavailability by 2,000. It’s pharmacology in a shot glass.

The bioactive molecules
Ginger contains gingerols and shogaols that inhibit COX-2 and 5-lipoxygenase, the two key enzymes in the inflammatory cascade¹. Fresh turmeric concentrates 3 to 5% curcumin, but its bioavailability is almost nil without the piperine from black pepper which multiplies it by 2,000². Lemon provides vitamin C which regenerates hepatic glutathione³. It’s the rescue shot: from the first symptoms, one shot and 30 minutes later heat floods the whole body⁴.
Ginger contains gingerols and shogaols, phenolic compounds that inhibit cyclooxygenase (COX-2) and lipoxygenase (LOX), the two key enzymes in the inflammatory cascade. Fresh turmeric concentrates 3 to 5% curcumin, a polyphenol whose anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties are documented by more than 12,000 scientific publications. Piperine from black pepper inhibits hepatic glucuronidation of curcumin, preventing its rapid elimination and multiplying its intestinal absorption (Shoba et al., Planta Medica, 1998). Lemon provides vitamin C (53 mg/100g) and limonoids, bitter terpenes that stimulate hepatic glutathione production, the liver’s master antioxidant.
Table of key micronutrients
| Micronutrient | Main role |
|---|---|
| Gingerols (ginger) | Anti-inflammatory (COX-2), anti-nausea |
| Curcumin (turmeric) | Major anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, neuroprotective |
| Piperine (pepper) | Multiplies curcumin absorption by 2,000 |
| Vitamin C (lemon) | Antioxidant, stimulates hepatic glutathione |
| Limonoids (lemon) | Phase II hepatic detoxification |
Preparation with an extractor
Ingredients:
- 1 tray of freshly cut wheatgrass (approximately 30 g)
- Juice of 1 organic lemon (with a bit of zest)
- 1 piece of fresh ginger 3 cm long
- 1 piece of fresh turmeric 2 cm long (or 1 teaspoon of powder)
- 1 pinch of black pepper (activates curcumin)
- Yield: 40-50 ml.
Prepare this shot with an extractor (pass ginger and turmeric between two pieces of lemon) or with a blender with a little water. Drink it in one go, on an empty stomach. Turmeric stains everything: protect your work surface and your clothes.
What I personally think
For this recipe, I use the Hurom H400. Cold pressing preserves all the enzymes, vitamins and phytonutrients that the heat of a centrifuge would destroy.
