Black Radish: The Liver’s Best Ally
Black radish is the supreme liver vegetable in French phytotherapy. It has been listed in the French Pharmacopoeia for decades. In consultation, it is one of the first remedies I recommend when liver tests show signs of overload: dull complexion, slow digestion, migraines after rich meals, morning nausea. A shot of black radish before dinner for 3 weeks and the liver bounces back. I have seen liver tests normalize in a month with this single gesture.

The bioactive molecules
Black radish has been listed in the French Pharmacopoeia for decades, it is the supreme liver vegetable¹. Its glucosinolates and isothiocyanates stimulate bile production (choleretic effect) AND gallbladder contraction (cholagogue effect), a unique double action². It activates hepatic detoxification enzymes in phase II (glutathione-S-transferase, UDP-glucuronosyltransferase)³. The organic sulfur in black radish is the direct precursor of glutathione, the liver’s master antioxidant⁴.
Black radish concentrates glucosinolates (sulforaphane) and isothiocyanates, sulfur compounds that stimulate bile production (choleretic effect) and gallbladder contraction (cholagogue effect). It activates phase II hepatic detoxification enzymes (glutathione-S-transferase, UDP-glucuronosyltransferase). Its richness in vitamin C (20 mg/100g) and potassium (554 mg/100g) completes its draining profile. The Egyptians were already using it 4,000 years ago: representations of black radish appear on the walls of the pyramids.
Table of key micronutrients
| Micronutrient | Main role |
|---|---|
| Glucosinolates | Bile stimulation, hepatic detoxification |
| Isothiocyanates | Phase II hepatic activation, anticancer |
| Potassium | Natural diuretic, renal drainage |
| Vitamin C | Antioxidant, hepatocyte protection |
| Organic sulfur | Heavy metal chelation, glutathione |
Preparation with an extractor
Ingredients:
- 1/2 organic black radish (approximately 100 g)
- 1 peeled lemon
- 1 piece of fresh turmeric (2 cm)
Peel the black radish before pressing (the skin is very bitter). Drink the shot 15 minutes before dinner to stimulate bile. If the taste is unbearable, add half a lemon. 3-week course at seasonal changes, especially in spring.

For this recipe, I use the Hurom H330P. Cold pressing preserves all the enzymes, vitamins and phytonutrients that the heat from a centrifuge would destroy.
